The brown pelican is one of two species of pelicans found in Florida, the white pelican being the opposite. They have distinctive pouches beneath their payments and cannot be mistaken for the white pelican due to the size and color difference. Cardinals typically cowl themselves in crushed or living ants, smearing them over their feathers, or permitting living ants to crawl on them. While scientists still aren’t certain what the purpose of “anting” is, some consider the birds use the formic acid secreted during their ant tub to assist eliminate lice and different parasites.
Finding a place to securely place and hatch their eggs, and raise their young to the point of independence, is a challenge birds have solved in many clever ways. They use artistry, intricate design and complex engineering. The range of nest architecture has no equal within the animal kingdom. Each feminine cuckoo specializes on one specific host species. How the cuckoo manages to put eggs to imitate every host’s eggs so precisely is considered one of nature’s main mysteries. Many birds build isolated, inconspicuous nests, hidden away contained in the vegetation to avoid detection by predators. Some of them are so successful at hiding their nests that even the all-seeing eyes of man has hardly seemed on them – birds like hummingbirds and manakins, for instance. One secretive nester, the marbled murrelet, locates its nest excessive in the canopy of historic Douglas firs over 300 years old.

In many species the male fowl’s ability at nest building is a sign of his suitability as a mate; he invests large effort in the task. Males of the European house wren construct up to 12 nests to attract females. They will proceed to construct new nests till a female is happy with the development.
